A standard interior or street-level image answers “what will the house look like.” A site context rendering answers a harder question: how this building meets this piece of ground. It places the modeled home on accurate terrain so you can read the cut and fill, the finished floor against grade, and how the roofline breaks against the hillside.

From an elevated three-quarter view, the things argued about in entitlement meetings become visible: how the second story reads from the street, whether a neighbor’s view survives, and how the footprint follows the contours. Why difficult Southern California lots need this most

Flat infill lots forgive guesswork. Hillside, view, and coastal parcels do not. The survey and file data I need to produce one

An accurate aerial architectural rendering is only as good as the terrain underneath it. The most useful file you can send is a current topographic survey with one-foot contours, property lines, and existing structures called out. It lets me build ground that matches the real lot instead of a generic slope.

  • A topographic survey or civil grading plan with contours and spot elevations.
  • Architectural drawings: floor plans, elevations, and a roof plan, in CAD or PDF.
  • A site plan showing the building’s position, setbacks, and finished floor elevations.
  • The parcel address or coordinates, plus any material schedules so finishes read correctly.

When a survey is not yet in hand, public elevation data fills the gap. The U.S. Geological Survey’s 3D Elevation Program publishes high-resolution lidar-derived terrain for much of California at no cost, which I use to rough in a hillside before the surveyor’s numbers arrive, though it is no substitute for a stamped survey.

From 2D drawings to a sited 3D model

The work starts by turning your drawings into an accurate building model, then setting it onto the terrain at the correct elevation and orientation. I then place the camera where the decision gets made: above and to the side for the planning view, or at street level for the neighbor’s-eye check. What affects the price of a site-context rendering

Cost tracks complexity, not square footage alone. Terrain is usually the biggest variable: a gently sloping lot with a clean survey is straightforward, while a steep coastal site with retaining walls, multiple grade changes, and dense context takes more hours. The number of views matters too, since each angle is rendered separately.

The condition of your source files moves the number too: a complete survey and coordinated drawings let me build directly, while missing grade data or conflicting plans add time. A single still, a set of stills, or a moving aerial pass each change scope, and an aerial fly-through animation reads grade and context even more clearly on difficult sites.

Hiring a licensed architect for this work

Most rendering shops are production studios of 3D artists, which is fine for a clean condo interior but strains on a hillside or coastal lot where the image must survive a planning department or a neighbor’s attorney.
